Overview

An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.

Aim

A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

Reasons for offering this Master Class:

Strategy is one of the most important and creative parts of organisational and educational work but there is a great deal of confusion about what this actually means and entails. It is of vital importance that educational leaders at all levels in Postgraduate Medical Education establish a shared strategic overview of future directions and developments that are clearly focused on the improvement of teaching, training and learning and the organisational structures and processes that support and enable these. Although this might appear to be a relatively straightforward and logical process the situation in which we carry this out is complex, ambiguous and often less rational in its functioning which requires a collective depth of understanding about methods and approaches to developing and implementing strategy.

Speaker details:

Sean O’Kelly is Medical Director at University Hospitals Bristol Foundation NHS Trust and has a Masters Degree in Organisational Development and has worked at a senior level in a number of large NHS organisations.

Aim of this master class:

To raise understanding about what is involved in effective strategy development in organisational and educational contexts and explore how this might enable future Postgraduate Medical Education planning and developments.

Objectives: by the end of the master class participants will be able to:

  • Describe a range of approaches to developing strategy in organisations and education
  • List the stages involved in creating a well thought through strategy
  • Outline how to recognise and take account of important external contextual factors when devising strategy
  • Summarise how to assess the internal priorities that should be taken into consideration for strategic development
