Overview

An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.

Aim

A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

Reasons for offering this Master Class:

Most Medical Trainees are from a different and younger generation than those educating them. While individuals in different generations are diverse, they nevertheless share certain thoughts, values, and behaviours because of an experience of common major life events. Furthermore, these values, reactions, and behaviours appear to differ across generations. Often misunderstanding and confusion arises from these differences of approach and – this Master Class will describe the well researched differences between successive generations and explore how best to train and work in accord with these.

Speaker details:

Clare Hines has had a varied career spanning both commercial and public sectors. She joined the NHS in 1999 and moved from primary care development into workforce development in 2002 and has since steadily developed a portfolio of work within Strategic Health Authorities covering all aspects of workforce, skills development and strategic planning. This has included: organisation liaison; workforce forecasting and modelling; demand and supply gap analysis; validation of plans and making recommendations to inform non-medical education commissions. She is an experienced facilitator and project manager. Since the transition into Health Education South West (HESW), Clare’s work has expanded to include authoring the 5 year Workforce Skills & Development Strategy and HESW’s Investment Plan. She is also currently the Interim Head of Corporate Affairs for HESW. In her spare time, Clare is a keen musician - both composing and performing.

Aim of this master class:

To describe and explore how generational differences can affect the effectiveness of postgraduate medical education and review changes the Deanery might implement in order to work productively with these.

Objectives: by the end of the master class participants will be able to:

  • Summarise the findings of recent research into generational differences at work and in education/training
  • Describe the key differences and similarities between 5 defined generations – Traditionalists, Baby boomers, and Generations X, Y, and Z
  • Account for generational differences with regards to a range of work and training practices including: attitudes towards teamwork and leadership, flexibility in working practice, motivations in work, desired workplace culture, preferred methods of communication, personal values, attitude to authority and rules, preferences for learning skills (‘hard’ and ‘soft’) and preferences for feedback and supervision
