East Midlands

There are 7 training units in the East Midlands with a total of 15 training places.

We offer a comprehensive training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Nottingham & Sheffield are major trauma centres. Derby, Leicester, Nottingham & Sheffield are all cancer centres. Cleft services are centralised in Nottingham and skull base surgery in Sheffield. Chesterfield, Lincoln & Rotherham have busy skin cancer practices.

Trainees are based in either the North or South of the region and this is decided at the start. There is some flexibility depending on training need and all spend time in Nottingham. Trainees rotate annually in August. There are opportunities for research and obtaining higher degrees within region and an Academic Clinical Fellow post is attached to Sheffield. There are also post CCT fellowship posts available.

There is a 3 year teaching programme, covering the OMFS curriculum, with regional study days every 2 months.

East of England

The East of England is an exciting, vibrant place to train with a keen consultant group to help you through all your training needs.  The East of England is able to provide all aspects of the higher surgical training for OMFS during the rotation, depending on trainee needs. Sub specialties are encouraged and accommodated within the region.

Scope of training:

One to one consultant training is provided throughout, quickly developing key surgical and clinical competencies, with direct access to interesting and complex cases at an early stage. With a diverse skill set within the welcoming and experienced consultant group, the trainee will gain exposure to open TMJ, rhinoplasties and sialendoscopy during training.

Trainee development is paramount to the educational and clinical supervisors our region.  Along with East of England regional training days, there are direct links and access to the Pan Thames study days providing further preparation for FRCS and the chance to liaise with other trainees out of region.  Audit and research is both expected and encouraged throughout the rotation, along with publications and presentations nationally and internationally.

Brief Description of the programme:

Northern OMFS Rotation provides training in core OMFS disciplines over four main hospitals, in Newcastle, Carlisle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. There are 6 recognised Speciality Registrar Training posts, and 2 Core Surgical Trainee posts. Paediatric Craniofacial and Cleft Surgery  attachments are also available out with the Northern Region.. Training in HN oncology, reconstruction, microvascular surgery , Orthognathic surgery, Skin Cancer Surgery, Craniofacial , Maxillofacial trauma is provided. Consultants have special interests in Facial Aesthetic surgery, Rhinoplasty, and Sialendoscopy.

The North East and North Cumbria, as judged by our junior doctors, provides some of the best postgraduate medical training in the UK.

In the recent 2017 GMC National Trainee Survey we are ranked number one for 15 out of the 17 indicators. Northern Ireland

Training

Oral Maxillofacial Surgery offers a run through program from ST3 to ST7. Trainee’s will rotate through Ulster Hospital and Altnagelvin Hospital for first two years then remain in the Ulster Hospital for the final three years. There are significant workloads and training opportunities in core areas such as trauma, orthognathic surgery, skin cancer, head and neck cancer with reconstruction.

On call

The trainee will be expected to take part in the on call rota for the specialty in each of the training units.

Administration

The Trainee will be expected, when appropriate, to participate in the day to day running of the departments in administrative activities such as organisation of on-call rota's, organisation of undergraduate training, patient reports and letters. The Trainee will have the opportunity to develop management skills in preparation for consultant practice.

Teaching

All Trainees will be expected to take part in departmental teaching for junior staff, postgraduates, undergraduates, nursing staff, etc.
Support is given for trainees who wish to undertake further qualifications in education.

Research

Facilities and support for research activities are available through University academic departments and within hospital departments.

Audit

Audit is an essential component of Oral & Maxillofacial practice and the Trainee will be required to participate in local and national audit activities.

Scotland

Pan Scotland Rotation with units in Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Ayrshire & Arran, Grampian, Lothian, Tayside and Forth Valley Health Boards

Why choose this programme

This programme offers a comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial training covering the whole of the OMFS syllabus. We have a clinical workload that enables us to provide quality training with good educational supervision in each unit. Academic support and research opportunities are strong, particularly through the academic institutions in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. These associations also give opportunity for involvement in teaching of undergraduate medical and dental students.

Scotland offers the cosmopolitan lifestyle of the big cities with excellent leisure, lifestyle and shopping, and also close and easy access to some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, with outdoor sporting and leisure facilities that are second to none.

Specialty Information

The normal entry point for the programme will be at ST3.

The hospitals which may be involved in the Oral and Maxillofacial training from ST3-7 are currently:-

The units include specialist Head and Neck, Craniofacial, Orthognathic and Paediatric (including all aspects of cleft surgery) teams. There are regular MDT meetings and joint clinics with related specialties.

Training

Trainees must make full use of the training opportunities provided in each placement. Rotations will be 6 monthly with an intention in the early years to have placements organised to meet the ISCP syllabus criteria for initial and intermediate stages of training along with an exposure to all aspects of OMFS, with the capacity in final years of training to begin to focus on specialised areas if desired.

On Call

The trainee will be expected to take part in the on call rota for the specialty. This is a regional system in the West of Scotland. In the Northeast the on call commitment is for the area covered by the unit in Aberdeen, in and East, for the area covered by the unit based in St John’s and in Tayside for the area covered by Ninewells Hospital only.

Administration

The Trainee will be expected, when appropriate, to participate in the day to day running of the departments in administrative activities such as organisation of on-call rota's, organisation of undergraduate training, patient reports and letters. The Trainee will have the opportunity to develop management skills as required by the Surgical Royal Colleges.

Continuing Education

The Trainee will be expected to participate in educational activities on a local and national basis. Trainees are expected to further their education through attendance at meetings and courses held both locally and nationally.

Local educational activities include journal clubs, clinical pathological conferences, clinical audit meetings, postgraduate courses and courses organised by the Royal Colleges.

Management development is encouraged and the Trainee will be expected to attend appropriate courses.

Teaching

At the appropriate stage of training, the Trainee will be expected to take part in departmental teaching for junior staff, postgraduates, undergraduates, nursing staff, etc.

Research

Facilities and support for research activities are available through University academic departments and within hospital departments. The trainee will be encouraged to participate in clinical research and time will be allocated consistent with current Terms & Conditions.

Audit

Audit is an essential component of Oral & Maxillofacial practice and the Trainee will be required to participate in local and national audit activities.

South West - Peninsula/Severn

The Oral and Maxillofacial surgery rotation is an overarching specialty within Health Education South West across both Severn and South West Peninsula. Severn PGME is responsible for the management of the training and assessment with HEE South West.

The rotation is split between the “North" Severn rotation and the “South" Peninsula Rotation.

Thames Valley

Vacancies:  

Health Education England Thames Valley covers the counties of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire and offers a comprehensive training programme covering all areas of the specialty curriculum including head and neck cancer, orthognathic, TMJ, salivary, skins, cleft, craniofacial, trauma and dentoalveolar. Oxford is the hub and the peripheries are spokes. All major trauma and inpatient operating takes place in Oxford with regional on call based at this one site.


Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery training is delivered by a 2 centre rotation of Oxford and Northampton which covers all of the curriculum across 2 sites and exposes trainees to at least 12 different trainers but minimises travel. Over 5 years the trainees spend 1 year in Northampton. There is agreement for one trainee to rotate to Portsmouth for academic exposure for one year if relevant. There is a strong emphasis on good quality training and both regional and local teaching programmes in place covering the syllabus. Trainees are well supported to meet indicative numbers, pass the FRCS exit exam and there is flexibility to allow special interest areas to be pursued and finishing school in the final year to prepare for consultant posts.

In Northampton, trainees are exposed to all areas at same time - in Oxford, trainees work in 4 month blocks related to Head and Neck Cancer or Trauma and Deformity (with salivary gland and TMJ disorders) and cleft / craniofacial exposure. General service on all blocks is also included.   There are 5 trainees - 4 in Oxford and 1 in Northampton.

Wessex 

Vacancies:  

This programme is based around 5 one yearly attachments in the main training centres in the region:

Each unit has subunits listed above and you will be timetabled to work there as appropriate. Each Unit offers good general training in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition, the units all offer particular additional experience in specialist areas.

In Chichester, you will be exposed to a large practice in the surgical management of skin malignancy and also in salivary gland disease.

Portsmouth is a busy trauma centre and also a subregional unit for the management of upper aerodigestive malignancy. Here, research is actively encouraged and paper publications actively supported.

Southampton is the second subregional cancer centre. In addition, close links with Neurosurgery have created a dynamic Craniofacial and Skull base Unit.

The unit in Salisbury houses the regional Cleft Centre, offering good exposure to this specialist service. Orthognathic surgery and craniofacial implants are additional areas of expertise.

Poole is a very busy unit offering wide general experience and also in Head and Neck oncology and skin malignancy.

West Midlands

Why choose this program

This program offers a comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial training covering the whole of the OMFS syllabus including craniofacial and cleft. We have a broad clinical workload that enables us to provide quality training with good educational supervision in each unit.

Worcester and Telford are busy units with significant skin oncology practices. Coventry, Wolverhampton and Stoke on Trent are all head and neck cancer centres and also provide wide experience in trauma and deformity. Birmingham is also a head and neck cancer centre, with skull base, vascular anomaly, cleft, craniofacial and paediatric surgery as well as being the National Centre for Defence Medicine. There is a very significant trauma practice and a large tertiary referral service for many aspects of OMFS.

Trainees spend at least five years rotating through 4 or 5 of the units. 1-2 years are usually spent in Birmingham. The first 3 years of rotations are fixed on appointment and the latter years are then determined depending on training needs. Flexibility is retained to meet individual requirements as well as the needs of the rotation in general. Trainees rotate annually at the beginning of April each year. Trainees are exposed to multi-disciplinary team working throughout their training.

Academic support and research opportunities are strong, particularly through the academic institutions in Birmingham University.

There are recognised post CCT fellowship posts in aesthetic, cleft, craniofacial and head and neck surgery in the region.

The West Midllands offers the opportunity of living within a highly energized and reinvigorated region with options of affordable city living or living in the beautiful surrounding countryside. The area also has excellent access and travel links to the rest of the UK as well as abroad.

A number of recent trainees have completed PhD’s or degrees and there is currently one academic trainee (ACF).

Continuing Education

The Trainee will be expected to participate in educational activities on a local and national basis. Trainees are expected to further their education through attendance at meetings and courses held both locally and nationally.

Educational activities include a regional OMFS SpR teaching program; individual training unit journal clubs, clinical pathological conferences, clinical audit meetings and departmental teaching.

Yorkshire and the Humber

Vacancies:  

We offer a comprehensive training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. You will get a wide exposure (24 trainers to 10 specialty trainees ratio) and good hands-on training (combined catchment population close to four million). In addition to significant workloads in core areas such as trauma, orthognathic surgery, skin cancer, head and neck cancer with reconstruction, there are trainers subspecialising in areas such as primary cleft, craniofacial surgery, distraction, salivary endoscopy, TMJ replacement, condylar fractures and cosmesis in the rotation.

We are a cohesive group of trainers and have a good track record in training including a 2 year didactic teaching programme cycle mapped to the OMFS curriculum. Trainees are also taught to teach in the consultant led programme.

Please note the Trent OMFS Rotation (Sheffield, Chesterfield, Rotherham, Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Lincoln) comes under the same Yorkshire and Humber Deanery. It is a separate training programme (Training Programme Director – Mr A Smith) and is listed as “South” on the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery website. It is a separate choice to the Yorkshire Rotation.
