Information Regarding each Trust/Hospital on Training Programme

Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Gloucestershire Royal Hospital/Cheltenham General Hospital: ST1-ST2 posts – These are two year rotations (x4 six month firms). General ophthalmology, paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, anterior segment, medical retina and glaucoma firms. After 2 years in Gloucestershire the trainee will rotate to one of the other units for their ST3 year.

An EYESi cataract surgical simulator is being bought by the Trust and will be in use by April 2011. This will be available to all surgical trainees in the region.

ST3-7 posts – There are 4 six month firms;

Medical Retina / Glaucoma / Paediatrics and Strabismus / Oculoplastics

Trainees can opt to spend from 12-24 months on placement rotating through these firms.

A very high standard of subspecialist training is available on all these firms.

There are 2 ST1-2s and 2 ST3-7s appointed to the Gloucestershire Eye Unit at any one time.

Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Trust

Royal United Hospital: ST1-ST2 posts – These are two year posts which offer a good general training in the following areas, primary care ophthalmology, paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, anterior segment, medical retina and glaucoma. After 2 years in Bath the trainee will rotate to one of the other units for their ST3 year.

ST3-7 posts – Trainees can opt to spend from 12-24 months on placement at the RUH. Subspecialist training is available in Medical Retina / Glaucoma / Oculoplastics / Anterior Segment disease.

There are 2 ST1-2 s and 2 ST3-7s at the RUH at any one time.

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust

Bristol Eye Hospital: There are no ST1-2 posts in the Bristol Eye Hospital

ST3-7 posts – Most trainees will spend 2-3 years as an ST at the Bristol Eye Hospital. The BEH offers ST firms and ASTOs in the following subspecialties;

  • Medical Retina
  • Vitreoretinal surgery
  • Cornea
  • Glaucoma
  • Oculoplastic
  • Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus

ASTOs are normally undertaken as an ST6-7, where more than one ST wishes to do a particular ASTO a competitive interview will be held.

There are between 8-9 trainees at the BEH at any one time.

There is also an extremely active Academic Unit of Ophthalmology lead by Professor Andrew Dick.

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Great Western Hospital, Swindon: ST1-ST2 posts – This is a two year post which offers an excellent grounding in general ophthalmology, glaucoma and medical retina. After 2 years in Swindon the trainee will rotate to one of the other units for their ST3 year.

ST3-7 posts – These posts offer experience in anterior segment surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, couloplastics and glaucoma. Trainees usually spend 12 months at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.
