General Adult Psychiatry Training at the Severn Deanery
This scheme offers 57 advanced training placements. Each placement has 6 core sessions, 2 special interest sessions and 2 study/research sessions. All trainees rotate on 1st August and there is a second intake of new trainees in august and February. Trainees are asked to give preferences for placements and have freedom of choice about planning their own training. There are a number of clinical lectureships/academic senior trainees (at ST4 to ST6) within the scheme, based at the Division of Psychiatry, University of Bristol. Advanced trainees have the opportunity of rotating into a training slot with a senior lecturer/professor for one year in research.
There are 20 full time general adult NTNs.
Special experience is available in community psychiatry, rehabilitation psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, psychotherapy, forensic psychiatry, mother and baby psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and eating disorder.
There is a written programme for each of the placements, which has been planned to give advanced trainees a broad experience of psychiatry, as well as providing opportunities to develop research/audit and to pursue special interest in other areas.
Training Programme Director is Dr Basit Hussain. The programme is administered through the Advanced Training Committee. The Head of the School of Psychiatry is Dr Rob MacPherson. The Postgraduate Dean of the Severn Deanery is Professor Davinder Sandhu.
Dual training in Old Age/General Adult psychiatry may be available if a trainee chooses to specialise in an area of practice within which the knowledge and competencies associated with acquisition of a CCT in more than one recognised speciality would be essential, after discussion with the relevant Training Programme Directors. This request would need to be indicated at point of application and any candidate would need to be considered appointable in each of the relevant specialties at interview.
The Head of the Department of Mental Health, University of Bristol, is Professor Ricardo Araya. Professor Araya and the staff of the University department are happy to discuss research and support advance trainings who wish to develop research proposals.
