Overview

An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.

 

Aim

A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

 

Reasons for offering this Master Class:

How to support doctors who get into professional and/or personal difficulties and therefore require skilled assistance is increasingly a national and local concern.  Much research has been undertaken into the factors that lead to this and how best to manage and help such clinicians.  This workshop will bring participants up to date with the latest thinking and findings, and outline a range of possible interventions  that can offer effective assistance and potential resolution.

 

Speaker details:

Fiona Patterson is a founding Director of the Work Psychology Group. She is a leading expert in the field of assessment, development, evaluation and innovation in organisations with over 20 years' experience of working at a strategic level with a variety of FTSE 100 companies, public sector and governmental organisations. Fiona was Head of Organisational Psychology at The Boots Company and an internal consultant at Ford Motor Company Limited (Global).  Alongside her consultancy work, Fiona holds a Principal Researcher post at the University of Cambridge and a Visiting Professorship at City University.  She has also held academic posts at the University of Nottingham and at the Institute of Work Psychology at the University of Sheffield. Fiona has published widely on assessment, especially in relation to selection, innovation and change in organisations.

 

Aim of this master class:

To understand recent research into clinicians in difficulty and effective methods of research and resolution.

 

Objectives: by the end of the master class participants will be able to:

  • Describe research undertaken across the UK and elsewhere into the causes of difficulties for doctors
  • Outline strategies for supporting and assisting colleagues and junior clinicians who have or face professional or personal challenges
  • Summarise the skills and knowledge needed to effectively help clinicians who get into difficulties or struggle professionally and   personally
