Master Classes for Senior Educators

Overview

An academic series of master classes mainly held at Deanery House on topical and emerging areas of medical education for the Deanery faculty. They will be open to the Deanery Educational Team and Educators in Schools and Trusts. Global and nationally important speakers will be invited.

Aim

Faculty development for senior educators in the Severn Deanery to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

Reasons for offering the Master Class:

There is a need to develop a cohesive and integrated strategy in using simulation in postgraduate medical education that incorporates delivery methods and options, use of up to date technology and comprehensive faculty development. David Grant has been working at these within the Severn Deanery and it is timely to review the range of activities available and hear about the best practice in utilising simulation that has been developed internationally.

Speakers details:

Dr Peter Weinstock is Director of the Children's Hospital Boston Simulator Program and Anaesthesia Chair in Paediatric Simulation, where his research interests focus on optimizing paediatric education via high fidelity patient simulation with a focus on quality improvement and patient safety. He serves as a Founding Board member of the Children’s Hospital Teaching Academy and actively practices simulation education both in the USA and abroad. He is also a member of the faculty of the Harvard Macy Programme. Dr Weinstock currently serves as President of the International Paediatric Simulation Society, currently representing Paediatric Simulation specialists from over 30 countries around the globe. He heads a robust research programme at the Children’s Hospital in Boston focused on the development, integration and assessment of comprehensive paediatric simulation programs and curricula at an international level.

Dr David Grant is currently a Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and Director of the Bristol Medical Simulation Programme at the Bristol Children’s Hospital and Chair of the Medical Simulation Centre at UH Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. He is also the Associate Dean Simulation at the Severn Deanery and Simulation Lead at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Vice President of the International Paediatric Simulation Society. David has pioneered an innovative delivery model in Bristol utilising simulation centre based delivery of simulation education to fund and support the implementation of the Bristol Paediatric Simulation Programme and the Bristol Adult Simulation Education Programme delivered at point of care. His simulation research interests include the study of transference from the simulated to the clinical environment, efficacy of debriefing in simulation and human factors and team training.

Aim of this master class:

To share knowledge and stimulate discussion about developing strategies and initiatives on using simulation in postgraduate medical education.

Objectives:

By the end of the master class participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to set up, contribute to and maintain a comprehensive, inclusive, quality controlled regional faculty development programme in simulation
  • Enable the development of sustainable point of care delivery of simulation in healthcare institutions and specialty areas throughout the region
