Survey Strategy
How will the Severn Deanery use results from the GMC Trainee and Trainer Surveys?
The GMC survey provides us with invaluable information on the quality of training provided in the Severn Deanery and highlights areas of excellence as well as areas where further action is needed.
This web page sets out how the survey results will be used in the Severn Deanery to improve junior doctor training.
Trainee Survey
Analysis of Results
A summary of "green flag" and "red flag" areas (those indicators in the top and bottom quartiles and with a mean outside the 95% confidence intervals of the national mean) by Trust and Speciality are circulated to Directors of Medical Education and placed on the Severn Deanery website.
A tabular summary, focusing on the "overall satisfaction" indicator for each training programme, ranking in relation to other UK Deaneries and ranking over time is sent to Heads of Schools and Training Programme Directors and is placed on the Deanery website and are shared with Directors of Medical Education, Heads of Schools and Training Programme Directors.
Dissemination and Action
Directors of Medical Education, Heads of Schools and Training Programme Directors are sent the survey tool link and the additional analyses described above.
GMC results are subject to formal discussion at Heads of Schools Meetings and Director of Medical Education Meetings. These occur every two months.
A letter of congratulations is sent each year from the Postgraduate Dean to all Directors of Medical Education, copying Medical Directors in Trusts and the relevant Heads of Schools of "green flag" areas (i.e. those Trusts with indicators in the top quartile and with a mean outside the 95% confidence intervals of the national mean) following results from the trainee surveys.
In terms of all "red flag" areas (i.e. those Trusts in the lowest quartile and with a mean outside the 95% confidence intervals of the national mean). They are then asked to create a specific action plan to address these areas – the plan is required in the annual Trust and School Annual Reports to the Deanery.
All GMC results and in particular "red flag" indicators are discussed at planned Deanery Quality Management visits to Trusts which occur every two years See Deanery Visits to Trust Schedule. Trust visits are also prioritised on the basis of results from the surveys.
Each Quality Panel is requested to undertake a formal review and discussion of GMC results.
All trainees are sent an email thanking for them for their participation to the trainee survey from their Schools Support Manager.
The Severn Deanery Risk Register includes reference to all survey results which require action.
