Frequently Asked Questions

Questions

  • There are only a few trainees in my particular specialty and results don’t appear on the GMC reporting tool. What’s the point of filling it out?

Although results will not appear in Specialty reports on the surveys reporting tool if there are less than 3 trainees, general information from these responses will be compiled with other trainee results. In 2011 the GMC intends to produce longitudinal reports using data from previous years.

  • Why can’t I just give face to face feedback rather than filling out a questionnaire?

We would encourage all trainees to give constructive face to face feedback about their placement to relevant colleagues. However, in terms of compiling information at a Deanery level face to face feedback from 1,845 trainees is not a practical option. The survey tool gives the Severn Deanery, Schools and Trusts the ability to compare results nationally and to accurately identify areas of good and poor performance. The more trainees who complete the survey, the more we can be confident of the validity and reliability of the results. Our experience has shown that the tool is an extremely sensitive measure of issues and is a means of promoting positive change.

  • I am being bullied in my post what can I do?

The Severn Deanery is committed to the eradication of bullying of junior doctors. If a junior doctor feels that they are being bullied or intimidated they should refer to the Bulllying and Harassment Guidance Notes to progress a solution to the issue.

  • I am not satisfied with my current post in terms of experience or that the curriculum is being adequately delivered. What can I do about this?

These types of issues need to be raised with Educational Supervisors in the first instance and escalated via Training Programme Directors to Heads of School as appropriate.

  • I have concerns about regional training (ability to access it and quality of it)? What can I do to influence this?

These types of issues need to be raised with Educational Supervisors in the first instance and escalated via Training Programme Directors to Heads of School as appropriate.

  • My rota is not EWTD compliant and I have concerns about the hours I am being expected to work. What can I do about it?

All Trusts in the Severn Deanery are working towards compliance with the EWTD. As of 1st August 2009 junior doctors are expected to work up to 48 hours per week.

The Severn Deanery takes any breaches seriously and encourages trainees to report non-compliance to Educational Supervisors in the first instance and progressed via Training Programme Directors to Heads of School as appropriate.
