Supervisor Accreditation System

The Severn Deanery requires that all Supervisors complete an online accreditation system to keep a record of their educational qualifications which are linked to seven requirements.

Drivers

The GMC (General Medical Council) require that every Deanery maintains a record of all supervisors in their area and ensure that they are adequately trained to supervise junior doctors (evidenced by educational training courses).  Deadline: January 2010.

We aim to improve the quality of junior doctor training via these processes.

Pilot Phase and Mail Roll-Out

The Pilot was launched in Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on 21 June 2010. The second pilot was run with Weston Area Health NHS Trust on 16 September 2010. We thank both Trusts for their support and feedback during the roll-out. The main roll-out to all remaining Trusts will take place on 15 November 2010.

Feedback has shown that the system is user-friendly and quick to use. We anticipate it should take no longer than five minutes to complete the accreditation process. All supervisors completing the process should be aware that it is one of verification of data rather than data inputting. Many of the courses referring to the Deanery requirements will have already been uploaded into the Intrepid database either via by Trusts or Deanery staff.

Finding the Website

As a Supervisor, you will receive an email containing a link to the Supervisor's Accreditation System, asking you to Activate the account.

Support

The User Guide will help guide you through the process.

Additionally, Severn's Intrepid Support email address will give you direct access to the Deanery IT support team.

Finally, Medical Education Managers have also been trained to use the system and are available to give advice and support.

Inclusions/Exclusions

The Primary Care School are currently being integrated into this project so all Schools and Trusts within the Deanery will participate. However, there is currently discussion between the Severn and Peninsula Deaneries concerning the School of Public Health in terms of the roll out of this project, which means that this School will be included in the final phase of the roll-out.

The Intrepid Database

All data gathered through this exercise will be recorded on the Severn Deanery Intrepid database. There are several benefits of this which are listed below.

  • Intrepid system is the main Deanery database for trainees and trainers and data from here is used for the annual GMC trainer survey.
  • The Deanery Information Management and Technology strategy is to keep all data here
  • Administrators can email supervisors directly from Intrepid requesting them to update their data – please be aware that confidential equality and diversity data is not available to them.
  • Trusts use the same system of accreditation creating uniformity and systemisation.
